Delhi
to Kathmandu Overland Adventure
14 days/ 13 nights
Day 1 & 2:
Delhi
Your trip starts today with your arrival in Delhi. No
activities are planned, so arrive early if you can: there's plenty to see.
On Saturday we visit the Great Mosque of Jama Masjid and wander through the
colorful bazaars of the old city, as well as visiting the memorial to
Mahatma Gandhi. We have time to explore the many fine museums and monuments,
or just soak up the atmosphere of Delhi.
Day 3 & 4:
Jaipur
Our first point of call is Jaipur, the vibrant capital of the state of
Rajasthan. Here we include a visit to the stunning medieval Amber Fort and
there is also time to visit the Old City, the beautiful Palace of the Winds
and the Johari Jewellery Bazaar.
Day 5:
Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary
After traveling by bus to the World Heritage listed Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary,
we ride bicycle rickshaws around this amazing reserve in search of some of
the 350 different species that live in the park. We overnight in Bharatpur.
Day 6 & 7:
Fatehpur Sikri & Agra
We drive to the deserted fortified Mughal City of Fatehpur Sikri, then on to
Agra, home to India's most famous site, the majestic Taj Mahal. There's
plenty of time to visit this amazing 17th century marble mausoleum, as well
as the Agra Fort. On Thursday evening we board the overnight sleeper train
heading east to Varanasi.
Day 8 & 9:
Varanasi
Varanasi is the spiritual heart of India. Thousands of pilgrims flock to the
great ghats to bathe in the holy waters. This is a sight you will never
forget. We take an early morning boat ride on the river and explore the back
lanes of this timeless city.
Day 10 &
11: Chitwan National Park
We leave Varanasi early in the morning for our long drive to the Nepalese
border, then to Chitwan. During our lodge stay, we explore the jungle on
elephant-back, where we have the chance to see rhinoceros, sloth bear, deer
and a multitude of different birds. We may even spot the elusive Bengal
Tiger. There are also some great optional activities such as jeep, canoe and
walking safaris.
Day 12 to
14: Kathmandu
The road from Chitwan follows the Trisuli River before ascending steeply
into the Himalayan range, and then down into the Kathmandu Valley. During
our time here, we take an auto-rickshaw tour to the huge Buddhist stupa at
Bodnath and the sacred Hindu district of Pashupatinath, on the banks of the
Bagmati River. Our ''Road to Kathmandu'' trip comes to an end on Thursday
morning.
