Discover Vietnam's elegant capital Hanoi – tree-lined boulevards and French colonial architecture on this adventure holiday through Vietnam's north. Journey to the remote North West of the country – an area of outstanding natural beauty, inhabited by myriad colorfully dressed 'hill-tribes' – trek through spectacular scenery, visit local villages and stay in the delightful hill-station of Sapa. A 2-day trip to the World Heritage Site of Halong Bay completes this varied and fascinating tour of Northern Vietnam.

Tour Highlights: Hanoi, Halong Bay, Trekking, Cat Ba Island, Mountain Scenery;Sapa Hill Station, Hilltribe Villages and Vietnamese Food.

Day 1: Departure from your Point of Origin.

Day 2: Arrival in Hanoi. Afternoon to relax or explore the city.

Day 3: Tour of the city, including the 11th century University, Hoan Kiem Lake, a walking tour of the narrow streets of Hanoi's bustling old commercial quarter and a highly original water-puppet performance.

Day 4: Head North West through spectacular scenery to Son La, with a stopover to visit a traditional Black Tai village – one of the many ethnic groups inhabiting this mountainous region.

Day 5: Morning tour of Son la Town including the Hilltribe Museum and old French penitentiary before continuing over more spectacular mountains to remote Dien Bien Phu on the Lao border – a provincial town and market center for the surrounding 'montagnard' peoples. In 1954 this isolated valley was the site of the catastrophic French defeat that led to the end of their rule in Indochina

Day 6: Walking tour of the museum and key sites of the important battlefield with the afternoon to relax by the pool or visit the local market.

Day 7: Continue to Lai Chau – a remote, rarely visited town, in a beautiful valley close to the borders of Laos and China.

Day 8: Explore the area by boat and on foot – discover the stunning landscapes of emerald green paddy fields ringed by jagged mountain scenery, the lush flora and the traditional way of life of the local hill-tribe people.

Day 9: Jeep or 4WD for our last leg over the high mountain ranges along the Chinese border, to Sapa hill-station. Stay in an old French style hotel in the shadow of the mist shrouded Fansipan Mountain – the highest summit in Southeast Asia.

Day 10: Explore the town, wander through the colorful market or sit back on your balcony and admire the view.

Day 11: Trek through the area's beautiful landscape of terraced rice paddies, lush forest, towering peaks and crystal clear waterfalls. Overnight in a Hmong or Dzay village.

Day 12: Return to Sapa and transfer to nearby Lao Cai town for the night sleeper train to Hanoi.

Day 13: Morning arrival in Hanoi and on to Haiphong and Cat Ba Island in Halong Bay. Afternoon to explore the small port, swim, or visit the nearby Cat Ba National Park.

Day 14: Boat trip through the incredible scenery of World Heritage Site, Halong Bay, with stop-offs for swimming and cave visits. Overnight in Halong town.

Day 15: Return to Hanoi and a chance for some last minute shopping before departure for your onward flight.
