Backwaters of Vang Vieng
Vientiane - Vang Vieng – Vientiane
3 days / 2 nights

Spend three days north of Vientiane, the capital of Laos, enjoying kayaking and a gentle trek.  Explore the limestone peaked countryside around the scenic riverside town of Vang Vieng and see rural life from the river.

Day 1: Arrival - Vientiane / Vang Vieng
Arrive at either Wattay Airport or the Friendship Bridge. Transfer to Vang Vieng taking our time for photos and stops of interest. Afternoon is free to enjoy the local sights of Vang Vieng.

Day 2: Explore Vang Vieng
A short drive north towards the quaint village of Phatang follows breakfast. Basic paddle instruction and a short practice session are provided before taking to the mild waters of the Nam Song River by kayak. We spend the day passing sheer limestone karsts and the delights of river life, stopping off at choice caves along the way. After a short trek to a viewpoint we stop for lunch by the river - time for relaxing and a swim in the cool water before we head downriver to an organic farm. Here we see how silk is spun from the cocoon and sample the tasty mulberry tea and fruit wines, which they produce here. As the afternoon drifts away, we approach Vang Vieng town, reaching our bungalows in time to view the spectacular mountain sunset from our riverside balcony.

Day 3: Vang Vieng / Vientiane
An early morning breakfast before we head south for the village of Hin Heup. Here we take to the Nam Lik River by kayak, passing through fun rapids and stunning scenery. At midday we take time to surf and swim the rapids or just relax in a small cool gorge and enjoy a Lao barbeque picnic. The afternoon is spent in calmer waters where we have chance to see how local fishermen catch the prized crocodile fish, then into steep gorges.  Here, the adventurous can try cliff jumping. The day on the river ends at Vang Mun village where our transport waits to transfer us to Vientiane.
